How does body odor happen?

While sweat is odorless, body odor is triggered when bacteria on the surface of your body break down the proteins in sweat into different amino acids. People who sweat a lot, people with chronic diseases like diabetes, and people with thyroid disorders are more prone to body odor. Odor can release from the armpit, feet, groin, scalp, pubic areas, private parts, and even the forehead. It can be increased by spicy foods, heat, and stress.

The following are ingredients do not contain the chemicals we find in most commercial antiperspirants and deodorants:

Apple Cider Vinegar

Rich in acetic acid and highly acidic, it prevents the growth of microbes on the body's surface. All you need to do is dip a cotton ball into diluted apple cider vinegar and press it on your armpit, feet, and other areas of your body to kill bacteria.

Baking soda

Baking soda is alkaline and it can reduce the ideal acidity level of sweat- which promotes bacterial growth. A less acidic sweat will produce a less offensive smell when broken down by surviving bacteria.  Mix baking soda and water into a paste, and apply directly to your armpits and other areas. This solution can also relieve yeast infections and other skin conditions.


While "bad" bacteria cause body odor, there are "good" bacteria in the vagina that promote vaginal health.  Probiotics like Greek yogurt and probiotic supplements can kill off yeasts in women suffering from yeast infection. There are probiotic deodorants for the armpit too.


Fresh tomato

Tomato juice has antiseptic properties. Just add 2 cups of freshly-squeezed tomato juice to a bucket of warm water, and bathe with it. This combination destroys bacteria that cause body odor.

Rock salt has cleansing properties that help it remove excess sweat and create unfavorable conditions for the growth of the microbes found on our skin. Add a few crystals of rock salt to a bucket of lukewarm water, and shower with it- to control body odor and prevent excessive sweating.


Green Tea Bags

Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that help remove odor from your armpit and feet. Just soak tea bags in warm water, and press against your armpit or your feet and wait for 5 minutes- before rinsing it off.  This process reduces the production of sweat.  


Lemon and Coconut water

Lemon juice (and other citrus fruits) is rich in vitamin C, and vitamin C has antifungal/antibacterial properties. It has a pH level higher than that of the skin and makes it difficult for bacteria to thrive. While it controls the production of sweat and oils from sweat and sebum glands, coconut water makes your hair glow and adds strength. This combination prevents odor that emanates from the scalp. To achieve this, mix 1 tsp of lemon juice with ½ cup coconut water. Gently massage it on the scalp or other sweat-prone areas of your skin. You can leave it to dry for 20 minutes before washing it off with water.


Henna and Methi

These ingredients are filled with antifungal and antibacterial properties and help fight bacteria that cause body odor. The mixture keeps the scalp dry and fresh. Mix 3 tsp of henna powder with 1 tsp of freshly grounded fenugreek powder, and apply the mixture to the scalp. Leave for 1 hour and wash with shampoo, water, and a conditioner.
